Electric water heaters are known for their durability and consistent performance and they have out sold gas water heaters year after year. If they are to need replacing, it’s usually because the tank has worn out and needs to be replaced. Buying the most durable electric water heater tank that fits into your price range is easy, if you know what to look for.
Attributes of a durable electric water heater tank:
1) Six year warranty, minimum. If a company has produced a tank for a water heater that will not last long, they obviously won’t offer a long term warranty because they know the chances that they will have to honor it are high. Look for a minimum of six years coverage for quality models.
2) Insulation. Look at the quality of the insulation used to line the tank. Many models, even some higher end tanks, use insulation as low as R-6. Insulation with a ranking as high as R-24 is available and some models do use it. Look for insulation with a ranking of at least R-14 when reviewing water heater tanks. This level insulation not only keeps heat in better, it is also more durable and won’t wear away.
3) Rust resistance. Read the specs of the unit you are considering and make sure proper steps have been taken by the manufacturer to make the tank as rust resistant as possible. It should also contain several chemicals and certain parts should be installed that make it resistant to all other types of corrosion.
