Vehicle maintenance should include personal inspection of the tires, the mirrors, turn signals, heater and air conditioner, fluid levels, and even sometimes windshield washer fluid. Cars that do not have good tires can have a blow-out on the road that may cause an accident or at the very least irate drivers who are slowed down because of your disabled vehicle.
Changing a tire on the shoulder of a busy highway is not advised because the person changing the tire has now put themselves into a dangerous situation where there is nothing between them and fast moving vehicles other than a few feet.
Tire changes on the freeway are dangerous. Keeping fluid levels at optimum levels and ensuring that they are changed out when the manufacturer recommends will also keep your car moving on the road instead of locking up the steering wheel or the transmission. The engine will seize if it does not get the proper amount of oil to lubricate it or if the oil turns to sludge that the pistons cannot move through. Also consider the water level in your radiator. It is always better to add anti-freeze to ensure that your car has the best protection to overheating. It is advisable to check the following things monthly to ensure that your car is as safe as it can be. Measure tire pressure and check for wear, cracks, and weak spots.
* Check around the car where you typically park and be sure there is no fluid on the ground
* Check all fluid levels. Include oil, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, power steering and brake fluid
* Check for cracked or split spark plug wires and ignition wire and check for corrosion on batter terminals
* Check the brakes and make sure the brake pads are not squealing and the brake pedal is not squishy Check alignment by finding a straight and unoccupied roadway and
* Drive forward. If the car pulls to one side there is a problem. The above maintenance will not only ensure a safe driving experience but it will also ensure the optimum gas mileage available for your car. With fluctuating gas prices it is never a bad idea to get the most bang for your buck or miles to your gallon.
