An electric heater is 100% efficient, as it can generate the same amount of heat that it consumes in electricity. Electric heaters are the most popular type of space heater because it is easy to find an electrical source and the cost of fuel is rising.
An electric heater only costs pennies per hour to use. They are relatively inexpensive to purchase and there are many types. You can find a space heater to fit your needs. You may have different needs within the same house. The models can range from a small under the desk type to large workshop, industrial types, to elegant fireplaces. You need to determine what you are looking for in a room heater and then go find it.
Most electric room heaters are portable. Even the large ones with fans usually come on wheels so they can easily be moved. They are easy to operate, you just plug it in. Most have thermostats that allow you to regulate the temperature so you don’t waste the heat produced. When the chilly season is over, you just need to find a small space in which to store your heater for the next season.
There are some things to keep in mind when using an electric space heater. The problems with space heaters arise when basic safety precautions aren’t followed. Make sure the heater is UL listed. Heaters are not so expensive that you need to take the risk of using an unsafe appliance. Keep flammable items, such as curtains and clothes at least three feet away from the heater.
Space heaters can be power hogs. Do not overload your home’s circuits. If possible, do not plug anything else into the outlet where the heater is connected and use a good surge protector. If you must use an extension cord, use a 12 or 14 gauge cord.
It is hard to say what is the best space heater because they all have their pros and cons. Don’t try to get one type that will fill all different needs. If you want a heater to keep your feet warm as you watch TV or sit at your desk, get one that will do that. If you are looking to heat an entire room quickly, you can get a nice heater with a fan to take care of that. Portable space heaters can give you so much comfort for the money that you spend. They are a good investment.
